A starting point

AI for Luminate and Louisiana's credit unions

A first sketch of how the work could take shape, drawn from our conversation. It's a starting point, open for you and your team to talk through and shape together.

What I heard

Louisiana's credit unions are in very different places with AI. Some hold back over the risks, others jump in with no guardrails around member data, and the smaller ones haven't come to you about it at all. Inside Luminate, the AI expertise isn't on your team yet, and you want Luminate to be the leader your members turn to on AI.

You see the opportunity in three places:

Underneath all three is the same balance you named: helping credit unions take hold of what AI opens up, and do it responsibly.

Start with a discovery

Get a clear picture and a plan

The discovery is the one small first step that's an easy yes, and what it turns up shapes everything that follows. It reads two things at once.

  • Luminate itself. Where the league stands today, what your team needs to be able to do, and where the guardrails should sit. A working session or two with your team gets us there.
  • Your members. Conversations with a handful of your CEOs across different sizes, plus a short readiness survey sent to the membership, to learn where they actually are with AI, what they want, and what's holding them back.

You walk away with a clear picture of where Louisiana's credit unions stand with AI, something no one in the state has put together yet. On its own, it shows you which members have started, which haven't, and what they need from the league. It also gives you a clear plan for the work ahead.

What the discovery opens up

What the discovery turns up sorts out which of these matters most, and in what order.

Make Luminate a leader on AI

I'd run the league through the same AI strategy process I use with individual credit unions: governance, staff capacity, and a few pilots. Luminate becomes a confident user of AI, and your team builds the capacity to carry the member work over time.

Pool your members' strength

Your credit unions come together to share what's working, build partnerships, and coordinate on things like group buying. Large and small credit unions would be in the same room, with dedicated time for each.

Build readiness in your smaller credit unions

A lighter version of the AI strategy process I run with credit unions, for a group instead of one at a time. I guide a small cohort through the key parts, and they put each one to work at their own credit unions along the way. It builds capacity in the credit unions most ready to start.

How it fits together

Once the discovery shows where your credit unions stand, the rest of the work takes shape. From there several streams can run at the same time and inform each other.

Questions to talk through

Three questions worth working through together:

Who you'd work with

You'd work directly with me, Brent Dixon.

I've spent two decades in the credit union system. At Filene Research Institute I ran applied research and innovation programs with credit unions and leagues across North America. I co-led the first innovation unit to serve the United Nations Secretariat, and co-founded Trabian Technology, a studio that builds for banks and credit unions. Today I run Dixon Strategic Labs and write AI for FIs, a weekly newsletter on agentic AI for community financial institution leaders. I advise leadership teams on AI strategy, and help credit unions take on AI with judgment and the right guardrails.
